News from Verndale's Past

75 Years Ago, June 27, 1946

•At the meeting of the Verndale American Legion Post 326 on June 25, election of officers of the post took place with the following officers elected: Commander Alan W. Pettit, 1st Vice Commander George Suddendorf, 2nd Vice Commander Percy Hunt, Adjutant Floyd J. Lepper, Finance Officer Robert E. Anderson, Child Welfare Officer Kenneth Ostlund, Service Officer D. A. Gibbs, 1st Assistant Service Officer Leo Bautch, 2nd Assistant Service Officer Floyd J. Lepper, Chaplin Robert Denniston and Sgt. at Arms Leo Bautch.

•The Verndale American Legion Softball team defeated Menahga Monday evening 18-11. Next Monday evening they play Wadena at Wadena. All boys interested in playing are urged to be ready to leave from Desrochers at 6:30 p.m.

•Four of the seven Verndale golfers who participated in the Staples Short Stop tournament on Sunday brought home prizes. Ned Rundell was the winner of the first flight and Bob Anderson runner-up. C. R. Peterson was the winner of the third flight and L.E. Perkins consolation winner of the fourth flight.


40 Years Ago, June 25, 1981

•All members of the community are invited to join the congregation of the Verndale United Methodist Church in observing its 100 years of service here. Special services will be conducted next Sunday, June 28 in commemoration of the occasion. The morning worship service will begin at 11:15 a.m. after which members, friends and relatives will enjoy a luncheon in the church parlors.

• Visitors to the museum open house were greeted by two historical society members dressed up in keeping with the surroundings. Merlyne Bissell and MaryLu McClure took a few moments to look at displays themselves during a lull. They and other members were on hand to serve cake and coffee to the more than 80 visitors who registered in the guestbook last Sunday afternoon.

•Devon Dougherty displayed t-shirts that he designed and silk-screened for the celebration committee. They will be available in children’s and adult sizes on Fridays in the information booth in McNair Park and during the celebration. They come in various colors.


15 Years Ago, August June 29, 2006

•The ATV class consists of: Krista Blair, Jimmy Blair, Keifer Pesola, Tyler Schmitz, Jesse Krause, Nicole Bart, Jordan Burgau, Dustin Motchenbacher, Mike Hejhal, Cody Moyer, Heather Hejhal, Nate Bart and Tanner Burgau. The four-wheelers they drove were donated for use during the test by Westside Sports of Wadena.

•The Verndale Bison out hit the Huntersville Horseflies Sunday in Lake and Pine Baseball action. Bison Steve Schmitz blasted two home runs over the right-center field fence and teammate Ryan Greenwood went 4-5 at the plate, but the Bison still came up short in the final score, losing to Huntersville by a score of 9-11.

•Air Force Airman Courtney K. Cannon has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. During the six weeks of training, she studied the Air Force mission, organization and military customs, performed drill and ceremonial marches and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercise and special training in human relations. Cannon is the daughter of Joyce Langston of Verndale and is a 2005 graduate of the Verndale High School.
