Junior Elora Wagner of the BHVPP wrestling program capped off an impressive season with a second-place finish at the MSHSL State Tournament. Competing in the 148-pound division, Wagner’s journey to the podium was defined by dominant performances before falling just short in a hard-fought championship match.
Wagner opened her tournament in the Round of 16 with a commanding 17-0 technical fall over Emma Taylor of Hastings. This match allowed her to get the first-round jitters out and work out a few kinks. She maintained that momentum into the quarterfinals, where she secured a 14-0 major decision against Natalia Zoller from Thief River Falls. Natalia ended the tourney placing 6th. Elora had previously defeated Zoller last season 10-0. Elora maintained a strong position on her feet to create several scoring opportunities.
In the semifinals, Wagner faced Aliah Fischer of Owatonna. Last season at the Pine Island Invite, Elora had defeated Fischer by injury default. At the time, she was only leading the match 1-0 going into the 3rd period before the injury. Elora was on the offensive the entire match and pushed the pace, which allowed her to score on multiple attacks in the 3rd period. Wagner’s control of the pace earned her a 10-4 decision, punching her ticket to the state finals...
