The Wadena County Commissioners held their regular meeting on Tuesday, January 20.

Event Center Project

On January 14, a meeting was held to discuss the 4-H Building/Event Center remodel project with Commissioner Brian Winkels, County Engineer Anthony Maule, Widseth Architectural Designer Trevor Guck, and six representatives from the Friends of Wadena County Youth (FOWCY). Dan Sartell of the FOWCY shared that he worked with CoBuilt Construction of Menahga to obtain an opinion of cost for the project as approved by the Department of Labor & Industry (DLI).

The project, as currently approved by the DLI, is estimated at approximately $1-$1.4 million, while available funding is estimated at about $365,000.

The original scope of the project included extensive improvements such as kitchen and bathroom upgrades, a building addition with pre-engineered trusses, new office space, interior wall alterations, door and window upgrades, mechanical and HVAC systems, fire suppression and sprinkler systems, interior and exterior finishes, and full plumbing and electrical work.

Due to funding limitations, a reduced project scope has been proposed that would focus on essential upgrades, including kitchen flooring and appliances, bathroom improvements, heating and cooling systems, insulation, and fire suppression if deemed necessary by DLI.

Maule provided this update to the commissioners. He noted that the architect clarified the requirement for a fire suppression system: it’s not just the addition of office space that triggers the need for such a system, but rather the scale and use of the remodel project. Any significant improvements could mandate the inclusion of fire suppression, per DLI. The architect will follow up with DLI to clarify fire suppression requirements in light of the reduced project scope...
