Looking Back



Mark Toepper, a 20 year old Loretto man, was seriously injured on January 19 in a car/school bus accident at the junction of Todd County Road 1 and 24, two miles west of Bertha. Toepper was westbound on County Road 24 and the Bertha-Hewitt School bus, driven by William Umland, was northbound on County Road 1 when the two vehicles collided. Toepper was extricated from his vehicle and was taken to North Memorial Hospital and sustained a head injury in the accident. Umland and the 28 students on the bus were not injured.

January 25, 1945

Lester Milbrath along with other 4-H’ers of the state are competing in the statewide 4-H and rural youth radio public speaking contest. The contest is sponsored for the third year by the Minnesota Agricultural Extension Service in cooperation with the Minnesota Jewish Council. The contest topic is “Why I Believe Education for Peaceful Living is Necessary.” The district winners will broadcast their talks for area radio stations. The awards will total $1000 in scholarships and war bonds.

The financial statement for the Village of Bertha for the year ending December 31, as published, indicates the operation of the affairs of this municipality is indeed a tremendous task since the village did a total business for the year of nearly $50,000.
