Amy Ashbaugh is doing something that a lot of people never think of doing. She is going to Spain for eight weeks to study Spanish. Amy is a 1996 Bertha-Hewitt graduate and is the daughter of George and Jean Ashbaugh from Hewitt. She graduated from Concordia College in May 2001 with a major in Spanish. Being out of the country is not new to Amy. She was an exchange student in Peru and when she returned she went to South America and taught English for about a year. While in Argentina, she spent some time in Chile.

The B-H Babe Ruth team played the top three teams in the Timberline League last week and were able to squeak out two victories. The Menahga pitching and defense were just too much for the Bears as the Braves showed why they are alone at the top of the league. Kyle Zirbes, Matt Hartung and Dillon Kneisl pitched well and Brian Kneisl had a huge day at the plate, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the talented Braves.

Listed among the casualties in Korea this week were Pfc. Earl Halliday, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Halliday of Bartlett. He was wounded when a communist mortar shell landed in a foxhole he was in. His most serious wound was a knee where shell fragments lodged.

With the aid of about 40 men of the church, the cement foundation for the new St. Paul’s Lutheran Church was poured in a single day. The volunteer workers joined the seven regularly hired workers, starting at 6:10 a.m. and ending at 9:40 p.m.
