News from Bertha and Hewitt's Pasts

July 11, 2001

Martina Hendrickson’s sister, Eleanora Berthiaume, who lives just outside of Hewitt checked on a shed that had blown over in the storm. Inside she found a mother cat and eight of her kittens who had perished in the building. Three other kittens were still alive. One died shortly after being found. The other two were taken to Martina’s daughter, Cathy, who was at work at the time, and brought them home. Gizmo, the Hendrickson’s small dog, became very protective of the kittens. It had been about two years ago that Gizmo had puppies, but Gizmo started to produce milk. After the first week, Gizmo took over the care, feeding and cleaning of the kittens.

An inquiry is being made by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) on the intersection of Highways 210 and 71 in Hewitt. Apparently, the intersection is deemed to have an illegal angle and MnDOT is calling to get any information they can on that intersection. It was suggested that someone talk to citizen Darryl Simpson about the intersection as he has a lot of information about it, including the rash of accidents which have occurred there.

It was announced that the property now occupied by the baseball diamond and the high school football field lying south of the school has been deeded over to the school by Dr. W.W. Will and the village of Bertha. The turning over of the land to the school was done with the idea of expanding school facilities if and when the time should come.
