News from Bertha and Hewitt's Pasts

On Saturday, July 7, a caravan of many cars welcomed home a hundred very tired, but excited Bertha-Hewitt band members and their chaperones after an eight day tour of Niagara Falls, Boston and New York. Their trip took them to 12 states, Canada and the United Nations. They visited many places that most of them will experience only once in a lifetime. The band participated in America’s oldest Independence Day parade in Bristol, Rhode Island, with approximately 300,000 spectators.

Last week, the B-H Hangout held their “60’s Carnival.” They invited other school age childcare groups to participate from Parkers Prairie, Staples, Long Prairie and Grey Eagle. Around 100 children enjoyed seeing Jim Vollegraaf from Staples show his snakes. Jim also told the children facts about snakes. The children were able to pet a boa constrictor if they wanted to. Afterwards, the children enjoyed a variety of games put on by the Hangout.

Residents of the Bertha District #51 will go to the polls July 27 in a special election to vote on a proposal to buy additional land adjoining the school grounds. The property is owned by Louis Martin. It is about 33 acres and borders the present school property on the east side of the athletic field which recently was deeded to the school by the village and Dr. W.W. Will. The purchase price of $60,000 includes the house on the land.

About 800 six-week old pheasants will be released in this area by the Bertha-Hewitt Sportmen’s Club, Buster Cary, club president announced.
