The Bertha-Hewitt School Board approved a motion to put a referendum on this year’s ballot for the Bertha-Hewitt School. The amount being levied by the district is actually 10% less than in previous years, according to Superintendent Larry Werder. If the referendum passes, the school will also receive more equity aid in the amount of $29,090, and without it they would only get $5,243.

“Our real hope is that someone is looking for a business opportunity and would like to live and work in a small town,” said Jim Walker, regarding the hope for selling the Hewitt Co-op Grocery Store. According to Walker and Ardy McCallister, part of the problem lately has been getting new volunteers to run the grocery store. The grocery store has been run by volunteers since it opened in November of 1992, at an average of 57 hours a week.

Cornerstone laying services were held for the new building being erected for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. A special guest and speaker was Bishop Peter Bartholome, Coadjutor Bishop of the St. Cloud Diocese.

Four Bertha High School students have been selected to participate in a session of the “Checkerboard Quiz” radio program recorded at the Motley High School auditorium on October 2. The public is invited to hear the entire show on radio WCCO on October 19. Bertha participants are Beverly Harlow, Karen LeCount, Carl Zutter and Duane Martin.
