No change in recount, Becker retains commissioner seat by one vote

by Trinity Gruenberg

The Todd County Commissioner District 1 race resulted in a one-vote difference between incumbent Barb Becker and challenger Sharon Thiel.

Due to the very close race, Thiel petitioned for a recount which was held on Thursday, November 21, in the commissioner’s chamber at the Todd County Courthouse.

The recount began at 9 a.m., headed up by Auditor-Treasurer Denise Gaida with assistance from Jolene Sabrowsky, chief deputy,  recounting the votes. Becker and Jerry Nesland, representing Thiel, were also at the table. Thiel explained she had Nesland represent her because he was impartial and experienced in handling the recount process.

The recount was completed just before 2 p.m. There was no change in the votes.

Becker received 1,201 votes, and Thiel received 1,200. Four hundred eighteen didn’t vote or voted for a write-in. The total number of ballots recounted was 2,819. There was no challenge on the ballots.

Becker and Thiel shook hands. They also expressed their gratitude to the Todd County auditor-treasurer’s office for the outstanding job facilitating the recount.

“Their professionalism, attention to detail, and transparency made the process smooth and efficient, and I truly appreciate their hard work,” said Thiel....
