Residents across Minnesota were treated to a spectacular aurora show this week as a significant geomagnetic storm lit up the night sky.

Triggered by recent solar flares and a rare “cannibal” coronal mass ejection (CME), charged particles collided with Earth’s atmosphere and produced vibrant curtains of green, purple, and pink light visible even farther south than usual.

The display reached its peak with a G4 (“severe”) geomagnetic storm watch issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for November 12, making it one of the strongest alerts of its kind this solar cycle...
