Pickup hits power pole trying to avoid car at 210 and 71 intersection

On Monday, September 13, the Minnesota State Patrol responded to and investigated a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 71 and Highway 210 in Hewitt. A Ford pickup, driven by Ronald Smith, 58, from Browerville, was northbound on Highway 71 approaching the Highway 210 intersection. A Honda Accord, driven by Gavin Peterson, 25, of Verndale, was southbound on Highway 71, slowing to make a left turn onto eastbound Highway 210. Peterson then made the left turn in front of the Ford pickup. The Ford pickup braked and swerved to the right to avoid the Honda. The Ford pickup entered the northbound ditch, hitting a power pole, and stopped. The pole was sheared off at the base and fell over. Peterson was cited for “Failure to yield right of way while making a left turn”. No injuries were reported.
