News from Eagle Bend's Past

June 14, 2000

Gabriel Rapatz had accumulated 120 days of sick leave, the maximum possible after 18 years teaching science at Eagle Valley High School in Eagle Bend and previously at Eagle Valley Elementary in Clarissa. He had scarcely been sick. So he scarcely had to leave. Then, in early February, Rapatz, a member of Christ the King Parish in Browerville, went to his doctor with a pain in his side. The examination revealed a fast-moving lung cancer which had spread to the teacher’s bones and other organs. Given only weeks to months to live, “I made up my mind I’m going to finish the school year with these kids,” he said.

Justin Ahrendt needed a project for his shop at class at the Eagle Valley High School. He mentioned that to his mother who said, “Grandma needs a cabinet for her dolls.” It may have taken Justin the whole school year to complete Grandma’s doll cabinet, but the end result was definitely worth the effort and all the loving care he put into it.

Again this year, in keeping with the community spirit inherent in Lionism, the Eagle Bend Lions Clubs has donated $50 to the local Future Farmers of America. The donation is to be used to help defray expenses for the annual FFA trip to Washington.
