News from Eagle Bend's Past

They’ve performed in parades from Paynesville to Menagha, garnering plaques and trophies. Over the past 20 years, they’ve become known as Eagle Bend’s unofficial ambassadors. For many years, they were the only musicians in the Eagle Bend parades. They are the Kitchen Klatter Band. Their music delights young and old. Actually, only two members play real musical instruments. Florine (Tyrrell) Smith plays the accordion and Ragna Johnson, the tambourine. The rest of the musicians provide their own instruments using kitchen utensils. Eggbeaters, washboards, spoons, a washtub and mop string bass, homemade drums and a strong kazoo section provide the accompaniment. This year, 1996, marks the 20th anniversary of the music makers.

The most interesting item before the Eagle Bend City Council on Monday night was the only item not on the agenda. Dale Sarff made a visit to the council to inform them that Dan’s Prize, a meat processing company currently located in Long Prairie, is looking for a second location. Sarff feels this could be an opportunity for Eagle Bend to latch onto. The biggest concern is the sewer capacity. That’s the number one concern for Dan’s Prize. Sam Cossentine said Eagle Bend’s sewer ponds have gone beyond their life expectancy and are running beyond capacity. The council said that the city should look at new sewer ponds whether or not this business opportunity works out.
