The Wadena County Commissioners held their regular meeting on Monday, June 22.
Reforestation Work Following Pine Harvests
The board heard an update on county forestry and approved site preparation work tied to earlier pine harvests. Heather Olson explained that two previously harvested county pine tracts need herbicide spraying this summer to control competing vegetation before replanting; the cost is $15,184. Because only one vendor is authorized in Minnesota for this type of spraying, the price reflects a state bid rate rather than a competitive quote.
The board agreed to pay for the work from the Timber Development Fund, which currently has a substantial balance and is intended to support reforestation and related activities.
Olson also reported three current timber sales that together will bring in roughly $75,000, with one sale drawing a winning bid of about $48,975 on an appraised value of around $17,500—seen as a strong return.
Commissioners discussed using the Timber Development Fund to cover ongoing reforestation (spraying and replanting) while tracking net revenue so the program continues to benefit county taxpayers over time...
