Todd County Board of Commissioners: Approve land classification review by DNR

By a vote of 3-2, with commissioners David Kircher and Randy Neumann voting against it, the board approved a resolution for the classification of tax-forfeited property and requested approval from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for the sale of tax-forfeited lands.

Background: On May 27, 2022, 27 parcels located in Todd County forfeited ownership to the state of Minnesota for non-payment of property taxes.

Todd County administers the tax-forfeited procedures in trust for the state according to Minnesota Statute.

According to Minnesota Statute 282.01, the county board must classify tax-forfeited lands as “conservation” or “non-conservation” before the next steps may be taken in the tax forfeiture sale preparation.

Once classifications are determined, then these parcels are sent for review to the DNR.

The DNR is directed by state law to review, authorize and approve the proposed tax-forfeited land sales if the tax-forfeited property contains certain features. . .
