Todd County Board of Commissioners: Will “leapfrogging” be a problem with new road deputy’s hire?

by Karin L. Nauber

The decision to hire Jeremy Pape for the position of full-time road deputy with a start date of July 26 was removed from the consent agenda for further discussion according to policy per Chair Barb Becker. Pape’s starting pay will be Grade 10, step 5 or $29.33 per hour. This brought about questions from Commissioner Randy Neumann.

He asked, “What does this position normally start at?”

Sheriff Steve Och said that it was normally around $24 an hour, but that Pape was coming in from the Staples Police Department with many years of experience.

Neumann was concerned about the labor union’s take on this and if they would consider it “leapfrogging.”

Och said that he had been hired in a similar way with wage consideration based on his years with the Long Prairie Police Department.

With Neumann opposed, the motion to hire Pape was approved.
