The Wadena County Commissioners held their regular meeting on June 6 at the Wadena County Courthouse.

Conditional Use Permit

Requested for New

Campground

An application for a conditional use permit was submitted from James K. Murphy for a campground for tents, campers and RVs with less than 50 units including tube rentals and hiking. It was brought to the commissioners with a resolution to deny the permit.

Deana Malone explained the public hearing was held May 18 at the Parks Board meeting and they took testimony, reviewed factors and asked for the application to be denied.

The proposed campground would be primitive camping. He plans to add electricity and water as well as seasonal units. Murphy wants to provide resort-style camping from garbage pick up to bear-proof dumpsters that will be taken care of for the campers. Following state criteria, he can have about 19 permanent campsites.

Murphy’s map shows roads and trails and a rough spot for camping, but not individual sites. Commissioner Bill Stearns would like to see it laid out and plotted, and took issue with “less than 50” when it should have said 20 sites. . .
