Wolverines hockey awards: Moyer All-Section 6A and Mid-State All-Conference Honorable Mentions

The WDC Boys’ Hockey team wrapped up its 2021-22 season with their annual banquet on Monday night.

The Wolverines finished with a record of 14-12, earning more victories than in the past two seasons combined.

“It was a fun year,” stated Head Coach Scott Woods. “It was nice to have a winning record. This group has been building toward that. The kids put in the time both off-season and in-season.

“I think they’re a very competitive group, no matter what we’re doing, so they push each other to get better. And I think a lot of it is things they’ve done through the years…

“They’ve played tougher schedules, as youth they had losing records because we played tougher teams. We told them that once we can combine the teams and get all three grades together, we can have some success. It was nice to see that finally come to fruition.”

At the banquet, junior Cole Woods was named Most Valuable Player, an honor that was voted on by the team.

“It’s tough having a child on the team,” Woods stated. “The last thing you want to do is play favorites or even give that impression, so I’m constantly asking the other coaches what they think and leave a lot of things to them.

“Having said that, I probably don’t give him (Cole) enough credit. He’s earned some nice awards this year and he’s definitely deserved that. I’m definitely proud of the year that he had and what he’s done.”

Cole led the Wolverines with 46 points (25 goals/21 assists) this season.

Woods was also named to the All-Section 6A Second Team and Mid-State All-Conference.

Junior Connor Davis joined Woods on the All-Conference team and received All-Section 6A Honorable Mention.

“Connor had a very good year,” Woods stated. “There’s Section First Team, Second Team and Honorable Mention and Connor was very close to those top teams. To be chosen All-Conference is a big honor too. We have six teams in the conference and only 12 kids are named All-Conference.

“I really loved how he played this year. He moved the puck well and did the right things to make our team successful.”

Davis was second on the team in scoring with 21 goals and 20 assists for a total of 41 points.

Juniors Aiden Sutherland, Aron Sutherland and Dalton Moyer were each named All-Section 6A Honorable Mention and Mid-State All-Conference Honorable Mention. . .
