Benning Printing and Publishing won three awards at the Minnesota Newspaper Association Better Newspaper Contest held on Thursday, January 29. There were a total of 4,102 professional entries and 177 college entries judged by Iowa news professionals. Ray and Marlo Benning are celebrating 25 years as the owners of the Independent News Herald. They purchased the newspaper from Ernie and Diane Silbernagel, taking over the business on June 1, 2000. The Silbernagels had owned the Eagle Bend News and Bertha Herald since 1979 and combined these papers with the Clarissa Independent in 1992, creating the Independent News Herald.
