Ray and Marlo Benning are celebrating 25 years as the owners of the Independent News Herald. They purchased the newspaper from Ernie and Diane Silbernagel, taking over the business on June 1, 2000.
The Silbernagels had owned the Eagle Bend News and Bertha Herald since 1979 and combined these papers with the Clarissa Independent in 1992, creating the Independent News Herald.
This publication is the official newspaper of Todd County, the Bertha-Hewitt and Browerville School Districts, and serves the communities of Bertha, Browerville, Clarissa, Eagle Bend, Hewitt, and the surrounding area.
Originally from Browerville, Ray entered the newspaper industry with 10 years of printing experience and had been employed at the Independent News Herald for a year before acquiring the business.
Over the years, the Bennings have expanded their business by starting the Benning Printing commercial print shop and purchasing the Verndale Sun on June 15, 2009, from the Citizen’s Advocate owners Mary Drewes, Carol Clauson, and Sonya Grabe. They also acquired the Browerville Blade on June 13, 2014, from Aaron Quirt, who had taken over operations from his parents, Peter and Theresa, who had been publishing The Blade since the 1980s...
