by Haley Youngbauer The Verndale volleyball team played two games this week, taking on the Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves on Tuesday, October 6 at home and the Pillager Huskies on Thursday, October 8 on the road. Pirates Defeat the Wolves 3-1 The Verndale volleyball team began their week at home battling the WHA Wolves. The Pirates got out to an early lead, but the Wolves were able to gain some momentum late in the set to lift them over the Pirates by a score of 25-23.

It was a great day for a run. The course at Balmoral is flat at the front part of the course where the elementary 1-mile run is, then goes to a more sloping area in the back. This course is fairly flat and fast, even with the soggy ground from the rain. The first race of the day was the Elementary one-mile run. Pirates Top The Eagles 3-1 The Verndale volleyball team had just one game last week—a conference match at home against the New York Mills Eagles for Homecoming. by Coach Mike Mahlen The Verndale Pirates celebrated Homecoming with a 41-6 victory over the McGregor Mercuries on Friday, October 2. Verndale took control early, scoring twice in the first quarter. Owen Weiher connected with Chase Jensen on a 28-yard touchdown pass, with Joe Elfstrum running in the two-point conversion to give the Pirates an 8-0 lead. Weiher then found Jensen again for a 22-yard touchdown. The extra-point attempt failed, leaving Verndale with a 14-0 lead.

This is a challenging course on a clear day; the rain and soggy ground made it even more challenging. Verndale took control early, scoring twice in the first quarter. Joe Elfstrum scored on a 2-yard run, although the extra-point attempt failed.
