Bears Building through Adversity and Opportunity

by Coach Jared Hoemberg
The Bertha-Hewitt Bears may be 0-4, but head coach Jared Hoemberg believes the foundation being built within the program is stronger than the record indicates.
The past two weeks have provided plenty of examples.
When Carlton-Wrenshall folded its varsity program, Bertha-Hewitt made the most of an unexpected situation by hosting Laporte for a full night of football. The Junior High played at 4:30 p.m., followed by the JV at 6:00, before K-6 elementary flag football took over the field under the lights.
The Junior High Bears rolled to a 40-0 victory, continuing a tremendous season.
“Our Junior High coaches do such an amazing job growing our culture and program,” Hoemberg said. “They have so much fun and learn in the process. They’re having a tremendous season.”
The JV also benefited from the opportunity to compete against an experienced Laporte squad. Although the Bears fell by one score, the night provided valuable experience for Bertha-Hewitt’s young players.
“Getting our freshmen to play together and our sophomores to play together was special,” Hoemberg said. “They’re learning, they’re competing, and they’re building relationships..."
