Bears Dodge the Rain and Dominate the Hills at Long Prairie

A decision by the race director to postpone the meet by one day proved to be a stroke of brilliance for the Bertha-Hewitt Bears cross-country team. After waiting out frigid temperatures and torrential rain, the Bears arrived at the Long Prairie Country Club on Tuesday, September 15th, to ideal conditions: crisp, dry air and comfortable 70-degree weather. Despite a grueling course featuring over 230 feet of elevation gain, Bertha-Hewitt delivered a showcase performance packed with personal bests and thrilling finishes.
The Varsity boys brought high drama to the chute in a spectacular display of freshman talent. Nolan Rach and Vance Lockwood waged a fierce battle all the way to the finish line, with Rach barely edging out Lockwood for a 2nd-place finish in 17:11.25 over Lockwood’s 3rd-place 17:11.66. The lightning-fast times solidify the pair as the 2nd- and 3rd-fastest ninth-graders in Class A, ranking them 11th and 12th overall in the state.
On the Varsity girls’ side, Kendra Miller continued her dominant autumn campaign, securing her third 2nd-place finish of the season with a blazing, season-best time of 19:00.91. Teammate Aulani Johnson put in a gritty performance to cross the line in 45th place at 24:30.8...
