The Bertha-Hewitt School is now one of 80 schools across 45 school districts in Minnesota that has adopted solar power, thanks to a grant from the Minnesota Department of Commerce’s Solar for Schools Program.

The Solar for Schools initiative provides incentives for installing solar energy systems at public K-12 schools, as well as state colleges and universities. The program offers several benefits to schools, students, communities, and the state:

The addition of solar power reduces energy costs, which is the second-highest expense for schools. These energy savings can help free up essential funds for the operating budget.

Students will have opportunities for real-time learning about solar energy and careers in the growing clean energy sector. The solar system will be integrated into the school curriculum, making it accessible to staff (including fifth and sixth grade teachers and high school physical science teachers) and custodians, with plans for broader access by more teachers and the public through the school’s website.

The local economy benefits from investments in expanding energy infrastructure and creating clean energy jobs, such as solar installation work.

Solar power helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with electricity use...
