Big Lake-Cushing Sportsman Club: Empowering Youth and Community in Toddy and Morrison Counties

Nestled in the heart of Todd County near the Morrison County Line on Highway 16, the Big Lake-Cushing Sportsman Club (BLSC) has long been a dedicated hub for outdoor enthusiasts and families in the region.

As the story goes, informally, BLSC got its beginning in 1951 and in 1961 officially became a club.

Over the years it has developed from a local community gathering of neighbors and hunting enthusiasts to a thriving club today.

The club’s calendar is filled with events that blend conservation, education, and community—with a special emphasis on youth-oriented programming.

Youth Engagement at the Forefront

The club’s youth-focused offerings stand out as a cornerstone of its mission. Among the most notable activities:

Mentored Turkey Hunt

The club had its 10th annual youth mentored hunt on April 26, 2025. There were ten youth hunters and ten mentors with one youth able to bag a turkey that morning. Some of the others saw turkeys but not close enough to shoot.

Youth Trap Shoot

Held each spring, this event welcomes shooters aged 11 to 16. Participants must bring their own firearms, ammunition, and beverages—accompanied by an adult. There are shooting stations set up from beginner to experienced shooters, along with opportunities to use a bow and muzzeloader. Each young shooter is fostered in both skill-building and excitement.

Over the past few years club members have volunteered to assist with drilling fishing holes and helping the Randall Elementary students fish.

Youth Waterfowl Mentored Hunt - September 7

There have been a few youth each year who have participated in the mentored youth waterfowl hunt.

Youth Deer Contest

October 16-19

The youth deer contest is held during the Fall vacation days in October with youth being able to weigh in deer at the BLSC club house. Prizes are given out to participants on Sunday afternoon...
