Carved in Butter: Todd County's Haylie Wielenberg Steps into the Princess Kay Tradition

Princess Kay and her court each have their likenesses carved from a 90-pound block of butter by sculptor Gerry Kulzer.

This tradition, which dates back to 1965, honors contestants in the Midwest Dairy Princess Kay of the Milky Way competition. These young women serve as goodwill ambassadors for Minnesota’s dairy farmers.

Princess Kay’s likeness is sculpted over the first two days of the fair, followed by one of the finalists’ likenesses being carved each day of the fair until Labor Day.

The sculptor and the princess being sculpted rotate in a 40-degree display cooler and periodically answer questions from the audience...
