News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, October 9, 1985

• Although the response has been great for talented people of the Verndale area to sign up for this year’s Extravaganza, more people are needed, according to Maurie Finck, director. Over 40 have filled out the questionnaires regarding their talents and choices of areas in which to become involved, but Finck indicated he’d like at least 30 more so that no one will be overworked. Registration blanks are available at Barb’s Cards and Gifts. Needed are dancers, vocalists, stage hands, seamstresses, lighting engineers, etc. Your prompt attention to this matter will be much appreciated so plans can proceed.

• The Verndale Lioness will again make an effort to replace worn out Christmas lighting fixtures by conducting a drive for donations from area residents and organizations who feel likewise. The local Lioness club has contributed the first $100 to get the fundraiser off the ground, and hopes to match the $800 which was spent last year for four new fixtures. Contributions may be left at First National Bank in Verndale.

• Holding a two-pound carrot typical of those grown this year in the garden of his parents, Bruce and Barb Brown, was Jeff Brown of rural Verndale. This one measured 6 1/2 inches long and 12 1/4 inches in circumference. His sister, Amy, took it to school the following day for Show and Tell.

• Neighbors and friends gathered at the Cliff Olson farm last week Tuesday and Wednesday to put up a winter’s supply of firewood and chop a portion of his corn crop. Pictured, Steve Dougherty and David Klodt packed the chopped corn in a bunker. Corn fell from the wagon being pulled by Lee White.

• The Eagle Valley Rebels football team scored on a 4th and 11 in the second quarter, which would prove to be enough to beat the home team. The Pirates were looking to end a two game losing streak of the season, but a team they have had good success against in the past, would not allow that. Nate Bart opened up the scoring with a one yard QB sneak in the second quarter to take the early lead. The two point conversation failed which ultimately became a crucial play later on.

• A 50-year-old woman who led a high-speed chase around all of Wadena County and beyond before being tased and arrested was charged with felony fleeing in district court. According to court records, Janet Lee Chasteen of Altus, Arkansas, nearly hit a vehicle when she went through a red light at the intersection of Highways 10 and 71 in Wadena. Verndale Police Officer Cory Carr pursued her, clocking her twice above 90 miles per hour and witnessing her nearly hit other vehicles on the chase which wrapped up in Motley.

• Verndale Liquor Store Manager Gary Rosenthal reported a net loss after expenses at the Highway 10 Liquor Store in September. Total sales at the off-sale were $14,182, while total purchases were $14,799, leaving an estimated loss of $617. This is the largest monthly loss of the year and the second month in a row for a net loss. Rosenthal says stocking up on product contributed some to the net loss and one competitor dropping their prices.
