News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, December 11, 1985

• Almost the entire center section of the roof on a turkey barn at the Dave Bessler farm gave way under the weight of heavy snow last Sunday morning, shortly after Dave had completed his regular morning rounds. A short time later, one of his sons asked about the pieces of steel sticking up in the air above the roof, so Dave went to investigate to find utter chaos. There was a minimum of $60,000 of building damages and also the loss of birds.

• Lioness Beth Yule handed one of the two new decorative Christmas light fixtures to Bill Beven, who, in turn, traded it for one of the old ones being replaced. The Lioness, with the help of area contributers, purchased four new lanterns last year at over $200 each, and added two more this year to add to the festive holiday atmosphere.

• Four girls are credited with preparing the background panels for the school Christmas musical next week and they are: Paula Schill, Monica Dolezal, Wendy Heller and Cindy Olson. When completed, it will represent Santa’s workshop. The elementary program will be held on Monday, December 16 at 8 p.m. and the junior and senior high presentation will be held at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17.

• On Wednesday night, Booster Basketball had a high scoring contest. The new team Police took on Deer Creek, who came out running and they stayed hot. • G.P. Anderson of Wadena marks the third annual Christmas in Wadena which includes over 87,000 lights, 18,000 amps of power and 2 1/2 miles of cords. To appreciate the planning, labor, and manpower that went into this breathtaking display, all one needs to do is stand next to the 12 foot tall video wreath that sits proudly in the middle of Anderson’s yard. The wreath is new to the show this year, as it took over a year to build and program.

• Verndale citizens are publicly expressing their concerns regarding the overall financial status of the city’s two municipal liquor stores. About a half dozen people spoke to the council during a public hearing on Monday, December 6, to solicit input on whether the city should continue to operate any municipal liquor stores. Due to the overall net losses in Verndale’s municipal liquor sales two out of the last three years, the public hearing was a state requirement. Highway 10 Liquor has not had a single profitable quarter of business since it opened a few years ago.

• Fair Oaks Lodge held their 19th annual Old Fashioned Christmas on Saturday, December 4. All who attended were able to partake in crafts, take in a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, take a sleigh ride and were treated to Christmas goodies and beverages. The kids could make a craft at the “Imagination Station”, and other crafts were offered to be made as well, such as a garland, Christmas cards, Christmas tags, ornaments and letters to Santa were also written.

• Dan Kneisl and Cody Yungbauer were named to the Pheasant North All Conference team, while Kyle Booth was named Honorable Mention All-Conference.
