News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, January 8, 1986

• Since the Verndale Historical Society acquired the Waisanen Heritage House, there has been a lot of discussion on the age of the house with the beautiful interior, with many stating the house is over 100 years old. Charles and Lenora Brown were among the original investors in the townsite of Verndale; purchasing the southeast 340 acres on May 6, 1879. An abstract search of this property shows that on March 8, 1880, A.E. Brown sold his Verndale property to D.B. Mason and purchased a lot from Charles Brown.

• Gathering up used Christmas trees last Saturday were members of the Verndale Boosters. The number of trees was down this year by over 20, with only 30 collected this year. Pictured are: Dick Tangeman, Wayne Mills, Jim Runyan, Mark Callahan, Chuck Tangeman, Gary Bramer, Armond Awanson, Eric Runyan and Joe VanDam.

• Booster Basketball played on Thursday night, January 2, instead of the usual Wednesday night. Terminators took a quick lead on a running game against Deer Creek whose outside shooting got hot. Terminators defense succeeded in keeping a four-point lead. Their rebounds got a lot of baskets and widened the lead to eight points. The inside game controlled the boards as they continued to hold the lead despite advancement by Deer Creek. Terminators won 48-39.

• A large number of those attending the open house of the Waisanen Heritage House on December 29 enjoyed pulling taffy. Among them were Ruth Jenson and Bert Johnston. It turned out beautifully and was very tasty.
