News from Verndale's Past
40 Years Ago, February 19, 1986
• Five little girls have entered the Little Miss Petite contest which is held each year in conjunction with the Miss Verndale Pageant. Pictured with last year’s winner, Melissa Ludovissie, are: Cami Carr, Becky Callahan, Cassie Anderson, Gina VanderSchaaf and Lori Johnson. The girls and their moms met at an orientation tea held on Sunday afternoon in the basement of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church.
• The winning team in the Booster Volleyball Tournament held in Verndale last weekend consisted of: Lori Wolben of Wadena, Steve Olson, Nancy Coats, Gary Bramer, Shelia Finck and Dick Tangeman. Finishing second was: Don Scheller, Jeri Scheller, Terry Geiser and Donna Geiser of New York Mills, Dave Hieb, Jodie Schmidt and Chuck Tangeman.
• Jennifer Ninneman of the Verndale Pirates ranks 8th in the Park Region Conference, having made 180 points in 17 games for an 11.4 average. She ranks second in the conference in rebounding with 199 for an average of 11.7 followed in third place by Peg Hokanson who had 167 for a 9.8 average. Credited with 115 rebounds was Brenda Richter, ranked 13th with a 6.8 average.
• Bill Jacobson of Verndale, owner and operator of Wadena Ambulance Service the past eight years, was honored last weekend by having the 1986 Park Region Wrestling Program dedicated in his name. Bill has supported the philosophy of a good athletic program and has volunteered his services to the Conference and other tournament contests.
15 Years Ago, September 23, 2011
• On February 28, Lois Gould, long-time employee for the Verndale Public School will be ending her career after 34 years. Gould graduated from the Verndale High School in 1967 and took a job in Minneapolis at Midwest Federal Savings and Loan. Returning to the area in the fall of 1974, she worked for Kennedy and Nerving for two years. Then in September of 1976, Gould received a call from one of the board members who asked if she wanted a job since she had applied for the position at the school and she has been there ever since.
• Week-long Snow Days events kicked off with the coronation ceremony held on Monday, February 7 with Elizabeth Youngbauer and Kody Graba crowned as the royal couple. Youngbauer is the daughter of Earleen Youngbauer and Graba is the son of Denise and Richard Graba.
• A packed house of boxing fans witnessed 12 bouts of Golden Gloves boxing. Seven Wadena boxers scored victories and three lost close decisions. Matt Umland, 72 lbs, of Wadena, showed quick combinations all three rounds to score a decision over a strong Derek Dolezal of Willmar. Charles Carpenter, 139 lbs., boxing his first bout had a real battle with Joe Jayce of St. Cloud. Carpenter won the decision. Jule Jackson, 110 lbs, used her long reach and solid left and rights to score a decision win over Amanda Larson of Willmar.
• The boys basketball team was looking to extend their two game winning streak and also stop the Eagles 10 game winning streak last Tuesday. The first half, the boys got out to a hot start and took a 20-11 lead midway through the first. Seven different Pirates were on the board early as they were sharing the ball extremely well. New York Mills chipped away after that and the squads went into to halftime tied at 35. The Eagles wore down the Pirates and went on to win 70-60.
