News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, September 25, 1986

• Completing their training sessions on Monday evening were the six candidates vying for the Miss Verndale title. On Monday, they went through the interview process which is held prior to all pageants, and later this week will begin practice of production numbers. Candidates are: Tammy Swanson, Pauline Colby, Rachelle Adams, Valerie Kern, Jennifer Ninneman, and Kim Trosen. Tickets for the April 12 pageant will go on sale March 24 at First National Bank, Barb’s Cards and Gifts and the Verndale Sun. Price is $3.50 per person.

• Replacing of the school gymnasium floor will proceed, after board members, with two dissenting votes, voted in favor of a new floor at last week’s first of two regular board meetings this month. Voting for were Theresa Wutzke, Bill Fisher, Jerry Nanik and Dave Bessler, while opposing votes were cast by Jim Runyan and Rodney Bounds. The decision was arrived at after other school needs, including elementary classroom space, were discussed.

• Present for the installation of Pastor Gregg Valentine at the Verndale Christian and Missionary Alliance Church on Sunday afternoon were his parents and in-laws. Pictured are his sister Elizabeth, parents Elaine and Reverend Norman Valentine of Pittsburgh, PA; Gregg, his wife Nancy holding son Jeremy; Nancy’s parents, Robert and Carol Slinkman of Anoka; and her brother, Robert Jr., his wife Debby and daughter Chrystal. Elaine Colby Valentine was raised east of Verndale, and while here enjoyed a visit with her brother Dan Colby.

• Seventh and eighth graders from Verndale taking part in the Mathcounts competition at Moorhead State University last week were: Jennifer Miller, Tiffany Anderson, Angie Koons, Ben Heller, Vince Reis and Greg Johnson.

15 Years Ago, March 10, 2011

• This week was a big one for the lone Raider Colin Turchin. He made the trip to St. Paul on Thursday and checked into the hotel. When the first found started we knew that Colin could make a big splash in the tournament and it would be a fun time. Colin shot in with a nice fireman’s carry and flopped his man over to his back. And just like that he got a pin in 30 seconds and he was on to the next round. Colin ended his season with a fourth place finish.

• The 19-5 Nevis Tigers came to town last Tuesday and got all they could handle from the Pirates. For nearly 36 minutes it was a back and forth battle as neither team could put the other away. The final score was 55-47 in favor of the Nevis Tigers.

• Cub Scout Pack 326 held their annual Pinewood Derby race at the Verndale cafeteria on February 24. Each participant had to race once in each of the three lanes to determine the winner of the 2011 Pinewood Derby. First place went to Garet Youngbauer, second place was Connor Dailey and third place went to Michael Bonkoski. • Discussed hiring a new police chief since the last one was terminated back in July. Cory Carr has been interim police chief since then, and the council is reviewing two applications they have received for the job. Those applications are in the process of being reviewed.
