News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, March 24, 1986

• A good sized crowd was on hand last Thursday night at the Staples AVTI for the first public hearing in six years on the Highway 10 project. They were told, barring unforeseen difficulties, the final legs in the Highway 10 project on this area should be completed in 1989, with the exception of city by-passes.

• Publication of last week’s issue of The Sun was delayed somewhat while pressmen were ironing out the wrinkles, making minor adjustments for smoother operation of the new Goss Press installed at WATCO in Wadena, the central printing plant for all newspapers in this area of central Minnesota. Last week was the first the seven-unit press was in operation. It can print 28 full-size newspaper pages at one time.

• Al Bielema, 39, and his wife, Kristen, after purchasing the Folkestad-Lepper Funeral Home in Wadena just over a year ago, have done extensive remodeling to the interior of the home. Another change took place effective April 1. That is a name change to Bielema Funeral Home. The Folkestad name had been associated with the funeral home for more than 59 years.

• Winners in the egg coloring contest received silver dollars as prizes. They are: Robert Otiz in the 8-9 year old group, Becky Carrion in the 6-7 age group and Joshua Rousslang in the 4-5 age group. There were 12 entries in all.

15 Years Ago, March 24, 2011

• On Saturday, March 12, the PAWS organization held their 8th Annual Fundraiser and Cat Show at the Verndale Lions building. According to President Nichole Dukowitz there was a record number of participants for the show with 25 preregistered felines and 110 people were in attendance throughout the event.

• The geometry students at Verndale High School were able to experience hands on learning by constructing and assembling many tetrahedrons to create a fractal called Sierpinski’s Triangle. The patterns of tetrahedrons repeat over and over again, while each stage is twice the height of the previous stage and takes four times as many triangles.

• The first grade boys basketball team from Verndale took first place at the Bertha-Hewitt tournament on Saturday, March 5. They beat Pillager in the first round, then Osakis followed by Upsala for the championship. They ended their season taking fourth place at the Verndale Tourney on March 12. Pictured are: Jayden Cornell, Owen Korfe, John McIntire, Matthew Greenwaldt, Carter Schmitz, Ryan Olson and Luke Weniger.

• Pictured, Cub Scout Master Chris Youngbauer gave Connor Dailey and Christian Schmitz some pointers on how to sand their shelf pieces. The scouts were given the opportunity to build a display shelf that would hold two previous Cub Scout projects, their Raingutter Regatta boats and their Pinewood Derby cars.
