News from Verndale's Past

40 Years Ago, April 9, 1986

• Marylu McClure, president of the Verndale Historical Society, is the first to place her name on the roster of local volunteer names being collected for the Regional Volunteer Fair to be held at Wadena on April 23. John Tulk, county coordinator for Volunteers Working Together, was looking on in the photo. Pictured is but one portion of a backdrop puzzle to be used at the fair. All volunteers are asked to stop at the bank where the puzzle piece is on display and sign their name.

• Miss Lynnette Hahn, 1985 Miss Verndale, will be appearing in the pageant this Saturday evening, April 12, to crown the new 1986 Miss Verndale. The pageant will be held at 8 p.m. in the Verndale High School auditorium, with a musical production as talent, street wear and evening gown judging.

• Louis and Ann Holm, formerly of the Thomastown area, were recently voted Sweetheart King and Queen of Greeley Healthcare Center, and will reign over the center’s benefit activities for the Arthritis Foundation during a month-long drive. The facility held a series of food sales beginning March 13 with a cookie sale followed by a donut sale on Friday, March 21, a popcorn sale on Wednesday, March 26, and a bake sale on Friday, April 4, and many other events. Proceeds will be donated to the Arthritis Foundation.

• Junior girl scouts, being sponsored by the Verndale Lioness, presented a brief style show at the Lioness meeting on Thursday evening. They were Nichole Lehner, Rita Schluttner, Janell Pierce, Jennifer Miller and Angie Koons. The Lioness also voted to contribute $50 to the Lind Matching Scholarship Fund, four dollars for ribbons at the Volunteers Working Together Fair, hear a report on the leader dog program for the blind, and learned that $312 had been raised for cancer research through the daffodil sale.

15 Years Ago, March 31, 2011

• March 11 changed the landscape of Japan, perhaps forever, as an earthquake, 9.0 magnitude, triggered a tsunami and rocked the island nation and left approximately 7600 people confirmed dead, thousands missing and close to 500,000 homeless, and crippled the nuclear power plants near Fukushima. Kellie (Maschler) and her husband Kyle Sebastian, who is stationed in Japan, have reported that they are safe. Kellie is planning to return to the United States as part of a voluntary departure of spouses and families from the base.

• Food and fellowship brought many from the area to Donovan’s Hall on Saturday night, March 12, to the annual Wadena County Dairy Princess Banquet. Allyson Siebert was crowned the 2011 Wadena County Dairy Princess and will be eligible to compete for one of the 12 Princess Kay finalist positions. Sara Bain Richter was crowned as the Wadena County Ambassador and will work at the county level throughout the next year.

• Playing their last game for the Pirates basketball were seniors: Zack Meidinger, Ryan Gronlund, Dustin Motschenbacher, Kyle Booth, Isaac Schmitz, and Cody Youngbauer. All Conference went to Meidinger and Dallas Ehrmantraut with honorable mention going to Motschenbacher. Offensive MVP was Meidinger, Defensive MVP was Motschenbacher, Mr. Hustle went to Ehrmantraut and Most Improved to Gronlund.

• Cub Scout Pack 326 sent four Scouts to the District Pinewood Derby in Little Falls on Saturday, March 25. Local Pinewood Derby Chairman Garet Youngbauer placed second in the District Bears Champion division, losing only by three thousandths of a second to the winner. Local third place finisher Michael Bonkoski finished in the top three for the first year Webelos division. Christian Schmitz and Austin Ludovissie raced in the open division with Christian placing second.
