• Over 50 rural Wadena County residents met last Thursday evening in the county courthouse auditorium with State Representative Loren Jennings, who is considered one of the foremost authorities on State Ditch Laws. Also present were Senator Don Anderson and Representative Don Righter. Jennings said the three groups most involved with drainage are the Agricultural Society, the DNR and environmentalists “Who don’t want to do any changing.” He went on to tell what has been done in Chisago County where he was instrumental as a county commissioner in getting similar projects completed.

• Bill Beven and Dave Hietala were voted into office on the Verndale School Board by 220 district residents who cast ballots last week Tuesday. Hietala received 153 votes, Beven 132, and incumbent Jerry Nanik, 115. Receiving write-in votes were Dave Bessler, Larry Rach, Clarence Horsager, Fred Klimek, Barry Blaha, Jay Perius and Bill Hess.

• Pinning the guests with corsages was Margaret Miller, administrator for the Verndale Senior Citizens Center. She also introduced the students as they read their winning essays about their grandparents or an elderly friend. The occasion was the observance of Older American’s Day at the center. They were Monica Wilhelmi, Jennifer Race and Carla Suhl.

• United States Senator Amy Klobuchar was in Wadena a week ago Friday to participate in the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Wadena-Deer Creek High School to replace the one that was destroyed by a tornado that ripped through the community last summer. • The Lady Pirates hosted Sebeka in a Park Region Conference double header on Tuesday, May 10. In game one the Pirates jumped out to an early 9-1 lead after two innings which included a home run by Jenny Swenson, a double by Lizzy Youngbauer and Elizabeth Johnson and a triple by Youngbauer.

• The Lady Raiders participated at Glyndon for the True Team Track and Field Meet. Unlike other meets when only the top six place and score team points, in the true team, all participants score points for the team. Like one would expect, the competition was very strong when they bring 17 teams in to compete in our section. The Raiders strength showed and in the 300 hurdles Kasey Willis finished fifth and Hannah Barrett scored eighth place. Kathryn VanDenheuvel finished second in the high jump.

• TC’s Backyard BBQ is comprised of Tyler and Colter Ehrmantraut who competed last year on the North Star Barbecue Promotion and did very well. At the last event of the season they went into the competition two points in the lead, however, they ended up two points short.
