News from Verndale's Past
75 Years Ago, March 1, 1945
• Mrs. Linnie Prine received the sad news Saturday, February 17 of their son, Charles, being killed in action January 24 in the Battle of Luzon. Charles, who was a Pvt, in the infantry, had been in the service for about a year and a half having been overseas for about a year. Although he had not seen combat until this battle he had been across that long. Charles was born in Sawyer, North Dakota 33 years and five months ago. He leaves behind his wife, Trina, who resides in Spokane, Washington and brother, Milford, living in Englewood, California.
• J. B. Conley of Verndale was reelected president of the Minnesota Wool Growers Assn. at the annual meeting held in Wadena on February 17. All other officers and directors were reelected. Mr. Conley was also again selected to serve on the National Wood Marketing Board which has its main offices in Boston.
• Mr. and Mrs. Charles Aldrich received the good news this week from their son, T Sgt. Orris Aldrich to not send any more mail to him as he is expected to be on his way home soon. Orris, who has been serving with a bomber crew from an Italian base, as Engineer Gunner, has gone over the required number of 35 missions to make him eligible for a well earned furlough.
40 Years Ago, March 6, 1980
• Two of the four occupants of a1978 Chrysler Newport were hospitalized overnight at Staples following a car-school bus accident last Tuesday evening. Mrs. Herb Hopp and four children of rural Bertha, were one and a half miles from their home, enroute to a meeting in Staples when she encountered a late Staples school bus. Blinded by the lights as they crested a hill, Mrs. Hopp’s attempts at staying on the narrow, icy gravel road were thwarted when the rear of the car swerved and was hit by the bus. Mrs. Hopp and her 16 year old daughter, Mary Ann, were both taken to the United District Hospital in Staples.
• Larry Beaver of Wadena, a former Verndale lad, said he is one of five from Verndale who are involved in the art of taxidermy. There are 135 in the state of Minnesota and 10,000 licensed in the United States, 20 are women. He told the Scouts that the word taxidermist means “arranging of skin.”
• Using food models, Roger Olson’s sixth graders are being quizzed on the leading nutrients provided by a variety of basic foods they encounter. Verndale is one of the schools chosen to pilot the nutrition studies program with grant money provided for educational aides for each age group in the elementary. Kindergartners also study nutrition for their level, and here measure and mix raisins and peanuts for their morning snack enjoyed with milk. Miss Robin Sannes, their teacher, watched closely as each child took a turn stirring the mixture.
15 Years Ago, March 3, 2005
• Trent Carr came home on leave from Baghdad, Iraq and took the time to visit Ardith Carr’s classroom. Ardith and her students have been following Trent and his unit, Bravo 134 Signal Battalion out of Hastings and their lives in Iraq through pictures, emails and videos sent by Trent. Trent is a multichannel transmission system operator and part of his job is to go into an area that doesn’t currently have communications and set up the needed equipment to supply communications to that area, by running cables and erecting towers, etc.
• Melissa Stave, 2003 graduate of the Verndale High School, recently earned a spot to compete in the MIAC indoors track and field final event. Melissa earned this place by competing in the North Dakota State Bison Open. She placed fourth in shot put and sixth in the weight throw.
• Aldrich Tractor Inc, of Verndale, has received the coveted “Vermeer Masters” award from Vermeer Manufacturing Company during a meeting conducted by the Pella, Iowa based hay harvesting equipment company. The award is presented to the top 20 percent of Vermeer Dealers who either reach or exceed specific sales, service and management criteria established by the manufacturer. Roger and Mary Jo Bahls, of Aldrich Tractor Inc. accepted the award for the dealership.
