Freyholtz Charged in Fatal Crash

A 21-year-old Hewitt man has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide in a fatal crash on Highway 71 in Bertha Township in April.
Johnathan Andrew Freyholtz was charged on September 2 in Todd County District Court with one count of criminal vehicular homicide for allegedly operating a motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of careless driving. The charges were issued by summons.
According to the criminal complaint, the crash occurred at approximately 10:44 p.m. on April 16 on Highway 71 in Bertha Township.
Freyholtz was driving a Toyota Camry northbound when his vehicle allegedly rear-ended a Chevrolet Silverado. The Silverado was forced off the roadway and caught fire, killing its lone occupant, Blake Baumgartner, 26, of Hewitt.
Freyholtz reportedly told law enforcement that the Silverado appeared suddenly and that its lights were not on. He also reportedly said he had been driving from Grey Eagle to Hewitt and had been awake for approximately 19 hours...
