If you’re seeking a psychological thriller that will leave you questioning every character and their motives until the very last page, The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides is a great choice to read. This was our book club’s book for the month, and it did not disappoint.

Set in London, the story follows Alicia, a celebrated painter who seems to have it all. One evening, she shoots her husband, Gabriel, five times in the face, after which she never speaks another word of it. Her silence puzzles both the media and mental health professionals, leading to her commitment in a secure psychiatric facility.

Enter Theo, a psychotherapist who becomes obsessed with Alicia’s case. Believing he can get her to talk and uncover the truth behind Gabriel’s death, Theo takes a position at the facility where Alicia is held. As he investigates those closest to her—including her shady brother-in-law, a possessive art dealer, and a narcissistic neighbor—he also delves into her diary, which reveals a troubled past and chilling events leading up to the murder.

Theo’s own life is less than perfect. He is deeply in love with his wife, Kathy, an American actress, and is devastated to learn that she is having an affair. His fixation on her betrayal leads him down a dark path, resulting in some shocking revelations of his own.

This book forces you to question everything: Did Alicia really kill her husband? Why does she remain silent? And what is Theo truly after?

As for the ending...it’s absolutely jaw-dropping. Without giving anything away, I can confidently say that not one member of our book club saw the twist coming. It was, without a doubt, one of the best plot twists we’ve ever encountered.

If you enjoy stories that keep you guessing, create a sense of unease in the best way, and deliver a satisfying, mind-blowing payoff, The Silent Patient is an absolute must-read.
