The local town festivals are coming to a close for the summer. Each year, I hear both positive and negative feedback about these events. Some people complain that certain things are missing.
I understand that nothing is perfect, and it’s impossible to please everyone. However, what many of these complainers don’t realize is that these festivals are organized by volunteers. No one is being paid to bring this event to our town.
There are two main components involved in every festival, and both are in short supply: volunteers and funds. People often want things to improve but don’t take any action themselves. You can make a difference! You can volunteer your time, join the committee that organizes the event, attend meetings, and contribute your efforts to make something happen. If you have suggestions, feel free to reach out to committee members, but remember they are also volunteers and can only do so much.
Another way to help is by donating. The more money raised for town festivals, the more activities can be included. Committees have to work within their budgets, and every penny counts. For example, in a town of 400 people, if each person donated $20, that would total $8,000. Imagine the different activities that could be funded with that amount!
New ideas for activities are always welcome. While many people appreciate traditional favorites, others are eager for something different. Each town has its unique character, whether it’s a tractor pull or a rodeo, and that diversity attracts crowds.
Mother Nature can also play a role, from rain to excessive heat or smoke, all of which can impact attendance. Unfortunately, these factors are beyond anyone’s control. Regardless of the weather, festivals will go on.
I commend the committees and volunteers who work hard to make these annual celebrations possible. I encourage everyone to consider volunteering or donating! And don’t forget to thank them for their hard work!
