Unsolicited advice often isn’t welcome, especially during tough times. Even if people mean well, it can be overwhelming.

I trust the science behind cancer treatment and the training that medical professionals go through to understand the disease and create effective therapies. Advances like targeted chemotherapy and immunotherapy are the result of careful research and are designed to treat cancer while minimizing harm.

Since my mom’s cancer came back, we have received many suggestions for “miracle cures” and alternative treatments that people believe will work. This has been really frustrating. When someone is already stressed and grieving, getting a lot of unproven ideas just makes things harder. Some people might even try these suggestions without realizing they could interfere with real treatments or cause harmful side effects. Even natural remedies or supplements—although they can sometimes help—can negatively affect medications or lead to serious reactions.

One claim that annoys me is that cancer is caused by parasites. This kind of incorrect information doesn’t help anyone. In my mom’s case, her relapse is linked to a lifetime of smoking, which is well documented by medical science—not to unfounded ideas about parasites, moon phases or karma.

There is a lot of information online, but it is not the same as medical expertise. Unless someone asks for your advice, it’s better to keep your suggestions to yourself. Many patients and their families are already dealing with difficult situations—they shouldn’t also have to sort through a lot of unsolicited and unverified advice.

Good intentions are important, but so is the impact of what we say. In these situations, spreading false hope or misinformation can cause more harm than good.
