Lavern Kauffman Convicted of Sexual Assault against Sisters

Lavern C. Kauffman, 24, has been charged with two felony counts of criminal sexual conduct in Todd County District Court. These charges come in the wake of serious allegations involving his older brother, Mervin Kauffman, who is facing 18 counts of criminal sexual conduct.

The charges against Lavern include third-degree criminal sexual conduct for allegedly engaging in sexual penetration with a family member aged 16 or 17 on or around September 12, 2021. Additionally, he faces a charge of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for multiple acts of sexual penetration with a family member under the age of 16 between July 2021 and June 2022.

The investigation began on September 9, 2023, when the Todd County Sheriff’s Office received an anonymous report detailing incestual sexual abuse involving Mervin and his minor sister, E.C.K. The allegations included claims that E.C.K. became pregnant as a result, leading to the birth of a child in late summer 2023.

Mervin sought treatment at the Mercy and Truth Retreat. On October 12, investigators interviewed S.S., the Clinical Director. S.S. reported that all six of Lavern and Mervin’s sisters—S.C.K., L.C.K., E.C.K., M.C.K., R.C.K., and I.C.K.—disclosed similar experiences of sexual assault by Mervin.
