To the Editor:

Everyday there are news reports about U.S. citizens being arrested without warrant and detained without access to counsel. It seems no one is immune to these threats to our rights and freedom. You could be next.

Here is something to consider and think about when it comes to our rights and responsibilities to protect ourselves and others in Minnesota.

Since DHS/ICE agents are neither “public officers” or “peace officers” as defined by Minnesota statutes, people in Minnesota should be protected to defend themselves and others who are being threatened under “The Castle Doctrine” in Minnesota.

Under the doctrine, a person is not required to retreat from their dwelling before using force, including deadly force, to defend themselves or others.

The Castle Doctrine extends to occupied vehicles in some interpretations allowing defense without retreat in those specific circumstances.

Most of us are law abiding citizens who value and help our neighbors, and have done so for generations.

We are a community, which is larger than oneself, and binds us together for common purposes. Let’s protect what we built. It is currently being eroded in Minnesota.
