News from Bertha's and Hewitt's Pasts

25 Years Ago

July 16, 1997

A float in the Bertha parade represented four pioneer families and 317 years of farming in Bertha Township. Riding on the float representing the farms were the Lynn Smith family now residing at the Herman Haase farm, the Bill Amundson family now residing on the Henry Haase farm, Reinhardt Haase residing on the Gustav Haase farm and the Richard Decker family residing on the farm of Herman Decker.

Former Bertha resident Brian Budahn will be part of the cast of Sigmund Romberg's “The New Moon,” a production of the Quite Light Opera Company, St. Cloud. Performances will be at 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18, at the St. Cloud Technical High School. Budahn, a tenor, has been involved in 10 major pieces. He will portray the character of Robert amid the laughter and romance aboard The New Moon.


75 Years Ago

July 17, 1947

Lt. Colonel O. H. Rehmann is included with four lieutenant colonels being transferred from Headquarters Twelfth Air Force at March Field, California, to the Air Command and Staff School, Air University, Maxwell Field, Alabama. Colonel Rehmann calls Bertha his hometown. He has been in the service for 11 years and was stationed in Alaska during WWII.

Bob Schwantz and Wayne Sagehorn were the big guns at the District American Legion Baseball Tournament at Alexandria while playing for the Osakis Legion team. Bob and Wayne each collected a home run, a triple and a single as Osakis swamped Starbuck 15-3. The Starbuck team was primarily made up of the same team that had won the high school district tournament in the spring.
