News from Bertha and Hewitt's Pasts


25 Years Ago

June 21, 2000

Jennifer Wallner and Zane Packard, seniors at Bertha-Hewitt High School, have been named Outstanding Vocational Education Students for the 1999-2000 school year. The Freshwater and Leaf River Education Districts, recognizing students who have excelled in the Vocational Education area, sponsor this award.

Dixie VanRoekel participated in the Noran Clinic MS 150 bike tour. The three day event ran from June 9 through June 11. There were over 2500 participants that qualified to join the tour. A person has to have a total of $200 in pledges to ride.


75 Years Ago

June 22, 1950

Celebrating 50 years of progress, the Bertha Cooperative Creamery Association is joined by the merchants in hosting for the residents of this community a picnic celebration on June 27. The highlights of the eventful day will be an address from Governor Luther Youngdahl at 1:30 p.m. The day’s activities will start with a parade of business exhibits and kiddies in costume with pets and dolls. Races and games for both children and adults will be held. A free lunch will be served at noon. Baseball games will be played late in the afternoon. Free movies will be shown beginning at 3 p.m. at the theatre. Business places will remain closed so everyone can take part. The day will conclude with the big event, a street dance.

Thieves broke into the Bertha and Hewitt schools and many other Todd County schools. The loss amounted to $150 in Bertha. Authorities state the thefts were carried out by an experienced group of individuals.
