July 26, 2000

  The Bertha-Hewitt Marching Band concluded their summer schedule with performances in the Crosby-Ironton Fourth of July Festival and the Bertha Dairyland Parade. Director Ken Nelson commented, “The band worked hard and passed all expectations this summer. They were dependable and a fun group to work with.” The B-H Marching Band has done considerable well in competition this year as in recent years. They placed first at the Prairie Days Festival, Paynesville Town and Country Days, Milaca Community Festival, Wadena June Jubilee Parade, and placed third at the Vikingland Band Festival in Alexandria.

First place winners from Friday’s scavenger hunt, hosted by “The Hangout” at Bertha Dairyland Days, winning Bertha Bucks were: Mickey Schuller, Steven Schuller, Erich Kirscht, and Jared Hoemberg. Jean Shaw and Angie Hurtig were in charge of the hunt. Second place winners were: Christina Mettler, Heather Klemek, Twyla Klemek, Chris Klemek, Brandon Klemek, Ericka Gibb and Josh Gibb. Third place was Kelsey Stach, Tara Wojtowicz and Ashley Sandberg. 

75 Years Ago

July 27, 1950

A fire truck, specially equipped for rural use, was bought by the Bertha Village Council. Representatives from six fire equipment companies were at the meeting. Each had 15 minutes to orally explain their bids. The bid of $1850 for the truck chassis by the Bottemiller Garage was accepted and for the equipment the bid of $4779 by the Flour City Body Corp. of Minneapolis was accepted, for a total cost of $6629.

The Wadena Municipal Band will be heard in concert in the village park this Thursday evening. Three local musicians play with the band, Charles Bottemiller, clarinet; Dale Franklin, clarinet; and Delmar Kotz, cornet. The Wadena Band is conducted by veteran bandsman Merrill Skalman who has been director the past 24 years.
