People eat every day, at least most of us do. But sometimes it isn’t possible. Sometimes the cupboard is bare. That is when the Bertha-Hewitt Food Shelf can help. The food shelf began in the early 1980s. “It started shortly after we begun the Head Start program,” said Sharon Howe. “The teachers were going out into the homes of the children and they sensed a need in the community for a food shelf. At that time Judy Pokorney was a Head Start teacher and she went to the church with the need she saw. And that is how it all began.

The sixth grade trip to Long Lake Conservation Center this year was another picture perfect year for the Bertha-Hewitt students. We shared our Long Lake experience with 66 fourth grade students from Pioneer Elementary from Pierz. Although we were a bit hesitant and were not sure how 100 kids running around in the woods could be serene or memorable, but we found it to be, as always, a great learning opportunity.

Devona Gruber and Duane Martin received superior ratings in the district speech contest and will now compete in the regional contest to be held in Detroit Lakes.

George Jones was elected commanding officer of the Hewitt Charles Burnett Post No. 140 VFW. Other officers: Harold Tritsch, senior vice commander; David W. Brown, quartermaster; Arnold Bork, Chaplin; and Gerald Denny, trustee.
