Fire Chief Pete Wallner was present at the April 9 meeting to inquire about updating the fire hall. He wants to brighten up the hall by having three rows of fluorescent lights installed and put a fresh coat of paint on the walls. The department is cramped for space. There is an old vault in the rear of the building that would give them more space, but it is used by the city for storage at this time.

Reggie Rach of Bertha competed in wrestling Nationals in Delaware with Team Minnesota. Rach won his first match, lost the second, and won his third match, staying alive until the quarter finals where he lost a close match 9 to 7. Rach was defeated by a kid from Tennessee that ranked second in the nation.

The winners in the American Legion essay contest were announced: Juanita Knedel, received first place, and Norman Quanbeck, second. The topic of the essay was “An American Citizen’s Rights and Responsibilities.”

A cast of 12 members of the Bertha Senior Class scored a hit in their presentation “Crazy, But Cute.” There was plenty of comedy, sprinkled with the performance by Dale Franklin, playing the lead roll as Danny Dover, a carefree 15-year-old, and his girlfriend played by Arlene Kassube.
