News from Bertha and Hewitt's Pasts

25 Years Ago

June 13, 2001

Molly Moenkedick was one of the essay winners in the writing contest sponsored by the Minnesota Twins. She received two free Twins vouchers and a certificate of participation. “Hi, my name is Molly, I am 11 years old, and my father actually passed away about nine months ago. But this doesn’t change the way I feel about him. I still imagine Dad as my same wonderful father that I always admired.”

The much awaited and anticipated new playground equipment for the park in Hewitt has finally arrived and was installed on Monday, June 4. According to Council Member Juanita Mitchell, the equipment had to sit for a couple of days to let the cement harden before the children could use it. They will bring in the sand and pea rock for the pit around the equipment later this week. The pea rock is a requirement by the DNR.

75 Years Ago

June 14, 1951

The first GI’s from the Bertha area to return from the battlefields of Korea reached home on Friday. They are: Cpl. Lyle Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson of Woodside; and Sgt. Edward Wolfgramm son of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Shagemon, who live south of Bertha. Although neither one was aware of it, these two soldiers fought virtually side by side in Korea and had amazingly similar experiences in battle.

Rev. J.C. Youngblood, former Bertha Church of God pastor, last week announced his retirement as pastor of Hope Chapel, north of Verndale. Rev. Youngblood went to Hope Chapel 11 1/2 years ago following his pastorate at the Bertha Church of God.
