News from Bertha and Hewitt's Pasts

August 29, 2001

Diana Chromey of Hewitt thought she was getting a speeding ticket on the evening of May 18. She and her husband Gerald were heading home on Highway 210 when a state patrol vehicle passed her traveling east. About five minutes later a little maroon car driven by Kevin McGrane, 25, tore past them like they were standing still. When the Chromeys drove closer to the intersection of 210 and Todd County Road 77, they saw the patrol car was off the road and at an angle. McGrane was pulled over for speeding. The Chromeys stopped and saw McGrane in the ditch. The trooper had bumped the man with the patrol car and tried to knock the sawed off shotgun out of the man’s hands. Gerald got out of the car and called 911. Gerald and the officer wrestled the man and got the gun away from him. The Chromeys received the State Patrol’s Meritorious Service Award.
