The membership dinner of the Wm. Larson American Legion Post and Auxiliary Unity 366 was held September 4 at the community center with 40 guests present. Amy Jackson and Jessie Hagen gave reports on their experience at Girls State. Commander Arthur Packard called the meeting to order. Harold Goepferd won the jackpot. The Legion and Auxiliary will contribute money towards improving the community center acoustics.

Bertha-Hewitt students expressed their back-to-school feelings. Kendall Yungbauer, first grade, “I am just glad to be here and stuff.” Chase Switters, eighth grade, “I’d rather be sleeping.” Trista Kneisl, tenth grade, “I am not looking forward to it at all.”

75 Years Ago

September 13, 1951

Hundreds of money-saving bargains are being offered by Bertha merchants on Friday and Saturday in the second “Big Bertha Bargain Days,” being held this year. A good response to “Bargain Days” last June has prompted this repeat performance.

Enrollment in the Hewitt School totals 157, two under last year’s enrollment, Superintendent David Brown announced.
