The Bertha United Methodist Church held its last service on October 14. Pastor Gary Taylor said that at a church conference held on September 23 the possibility of closing the church was discussed. It was decided at that time that there were too few members and not enough money to be able to keep the church open. On August 12, 1877, the church was organized under the supervision of Reverend Heinrich Bottecher.

The Bertha-Hewitt Contemporary Conflicts class is part of a service-learning project that would connect the communities of Bertha and Hewitt closer together. This project is a joint effort between several classes at the Bertha-Hewitt School. The project would consist of building a four-mile trail between Bertha and Hewitt, where the old railroad tracks were. It would possibly be paved eight feet wide with mowed shoulders.
